In June, Royal Bank of Canada returns to the Masterpiece London Art Fair as principal sponsor, reflecting our passion for the arts and our ambition to provide new perspectives for all.
First held in 2010, Masterpiece London has become the leading international cross-collecting fair for art, antiques and design and a must-attend event for collectors, exhibitors and curators in the art and auction world.
Now in our third year as principal sponsor, we are bringing back our Fifth Plinth project as we seek to showcase different themes in art. The RBC Fifth Plinth draws inspiration from the Fourth Plinth Programme in London’s Trafalgar Square, where the northwest corner plinth has hosted a series of dramatic commissions that both excite and challenge.
For 2016, our plinth outside the Royal Bank of Canada Lounge explores the theme of ‘the female perspective’. Myriad female voices can be heard at all levels in the art world today – they lead institutions, make great works, and buy and build great collections. Taken as a whole, the selected pieces for our Fifth Plinth – which have been created by women, for women, or about women – represent a timeline of the female influence on art from 350 B.C. to the present day.
Masterpiece takes place annually at the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea each summer. The fair is now firmly established as a world-class event in the international arts calendar along with Art Basel and Frieze (London and New York).
At RBC, our support of the arts has been a long-standing priority as we recognise the important role arts and culture play in building vibrant communities and strong economies.
