(Asian Private Banker)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>RBC Wealth Management is tapping rising demand for complex cross-border wealth planning, supported by its bank-owned trust infrastructure, as it expands in Asia\u2019s wealth market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian wealth manager was among the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asianprivatebanker.com\/insights-related\/private-banking-hiring-report-2025\/#top-five-banks-by-hiring-volume-rbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most active hirers in Asia in 2025 <\/a>, with higher RM headcount and redesigned team structures that place greater accountability on team leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"row blockId-def11903-7498-4a02-b22e-0b8c5c72802f\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbcwm-column col-lg-8\">\n<div style=\"height:71px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cIf we drill down to wealth, especially within Asia, we\u2019ve made a number of significant changes that have contributed to our success,\u201d said Victor Chao, who heads up the North Asia private banking business at RBC Wealth Management.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-rbcwm-column col-lg-4\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized has-custom-border is-style-default wp-duotone-unset-1\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/02\/victor-chao.png\" alt=\"headshot of Victor Chao\" class=\"wp-image-14345\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:0px;border-top-right-radius:0px;border-bottom-left-radius:0px;border-bottom-right-radius:0px;aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:216px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/02\/victor-chao.png 900w, https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/02\/victor-chao.png?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/02\/victor-chao.png?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Victor Chao, Head of Private Banking, North Asia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy aligns with a broader push under Rod Ireland, head of wealth management Asia, to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asianprivatebanker.com\/private-wealth\/private-banking\/inside-rod-irelands-asia-strategy-for-rbc-wealth-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow the business organically <\/a>.&nbsp;Chao said the firm is tracking well across revenue, assets, headcount, RM productivity, and cost-to-income ratios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asia is also becoming a more meaningful part of the overall franchise. \u201cYou could say it\u2019s our time to shine. We\u2019re proud of what we\u2019ve done so far, and we can continue to shine because we\u2019re sustaining that growth across all of our KPIs and metrics,\u201d Chao told&nbsp;<em>Asian Private Banker&nbsp;<\/em>in a recent interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While RBC WM does not disclose regional figures, APAC is becoming \u201cmuch more significant\u201d as a percentage of the business\u201d, though the firm remains&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asianprivatebanker.com\/aum-tables-asia-2025\/aum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outside APB\u2019s top 25 AUM League Table <\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at opportunities where the business could pivot outside of North America, the UK and Asia are places where we are experienced and where we\u2019ve had a foothold,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hiring-spree-nbsp\"><strong>Hiring spree&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>RBC Wealth Management Asia has expanded its RM headcount by more than 50 percent over the past two years, reflecting a more targeted hiring approach. Candidates meet multiple stakeholders during the recruitment process to align expectations on roles and outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn our Hong Kong-based North Asia business, we were primarily more of a Hong Kong, Taiwan client base, and now we\u2019re becoming a Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan client base. We\u2019re diversifying rapidly,\u201d Chao said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Client onboarding is inherently unpredictable, he added, which is why the bank closely monitors and supports RMs\u2019 core activities \u2014 including how they engage prospects, manage leads, and complete compliance documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do a lot of client discovery. We\u2019re happy to give a bit more time for the RM and the client to figure out what\u2019s the first need that should happen and then work from there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rbc-wm-s-north-asia-hires-in-the-past-24-months-as-of-31-may-2026\">RBC WM\u2019s North Asia hires in the past 24 months (as of 31 May 2026)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>RBC WM Asia has restructured its teams so that team heads are now more focused on RM performance rather than pure production. This shift has fostered a more collaborative setup, with RMs supported by investment counsellors, product specialists, and a dedicated compliance advisory team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve built on some very fundamental strengths with respect to the prudent and methodical Canadian banking process, and then built on top of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shifting-client-behaviour-nbsp\"><strong>Shifting client behaviour&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chao, who has been in private banking since 1997, sees that differentiation today is less about product access and more about relationship strength, bank stability, and planning-led advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re an individual with assets that you want to entrust somewhere, you want to be with a big bank, a safe bank, and a growing bank. RBC fits all of those three criteria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted a shift in client demand from investment-only solutions to broader wealth planning and structuring. High-net-worth families increasingly require cross-border solutions as beneficiaries live globally, often in higher-tax jurisdictions, making succession planning more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Greater China, he added, wealth preservation concerns also extend to protecting family assets from life events such as divorce or business risks linked to entrepreneurial activity by heirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think investments still are a key core product, but when we talk about leading the conversation with clients, it\u2019s really about wealth planning, and this is where I think RBC is really differentiated,\u201d Chao said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RBC\u2019s trust platform spans Canada, the US, Jersey, and Singapore, supporting both onshore and offshore planning. \u201cWe strategically expanded our trust capabilities into Singapore a few years back, and that dovetailed very well for us with respect to planning for North America, as well as other jurisdictions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canadian-connections-nbsp\">Canadian connections&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been growing cross-border interest in Canadian assets, particularly in the energy sector, amid geopolitical tensions, according to Chao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank is also supporting APAC clients on US listings, acquisitions, and divestments, leveraging its North American platform. \u201cRBC is a bank that lends strategically to clients. We\u2019re still double A-rated with a balance sheet that we deploy globally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s population of 40 million includes a sizeable Asian diaspora, while around 10% of Hong Kong\u2019s population has ties to Canada through citizenship, residency, education, or family. These links continue to drive cross-border investment flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCanada needs significant investment and a fair number of people look at Canada as a country with untapped resources.
