Seven out of 10 business leaders say that their<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.rbcroyalbank.com\/what-small-businesses-can-learn-from-the-colonial-pipeline-ransomware-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-ext\" rel=\"noopener\">cyber security risks are increasing<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>and cyber readiness is more important given the potential risk that a cyber incident poses.<\/p>\n<p>When you understand the potential online risks to your business and plan the steps you need to take to contain them, you can concentrate more on growing your business.<\/p>\n<p>Here are considerations for business owners to help develop their cyber readiness:<\/p>\n<h4>Developing cyber readiness starts with:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing your awareness of successful cyber threats, and understanding how they might affect your business operations<\/li>\n<li>Learning effective tactics you can practice against cyber threats, and focusing on the protections that are within your control<\/li>\n<li>Keeping alert to cyber threats, practicing healthy cyber habits, and committing to continuous learning and adapting your cyber hygiene habits to meet these threats<\/li>\n<li>Knowing the relevant reputational, legal, and operational risks to your business from below standard cyber security practices<\/li>\n<li>Planning ahead to reduce the potential impact of cyber threats to your business, your employees, and your customers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOwners should pay as much attention to their operational cyber readiness as they do to their employee safety, customer experience, cash flow, supply chain, or equally business-critical parts of your business,\u201d says James Lee, a cyber security consultant for Royal Bank of Canada. \u201cThink about cyber security when you think about your people, your processes, your technologies and your customers&#8217; user experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Be informed about and prepared for cyber security risks before they happen. Then you can concentrate more on growing your business and worrying less about your cyber risks.<\/p>\n<h4>Where to start: Cyber security for your small business<\/h4>\n<h5>1. Determine what needs protection<\/h5>\n<p>Identify your most valuable information, Lee explains. \u201cThink about, \u2018What kind of data do I have,\u2019 \u2018What does it mean to me if I lose control of that data,\u2019 and <span>\u2018<\/span>What steps can I take to increase the possibility that, if I lose control of that data, I can recover it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>2. Protect your data<\/h5>\n<p>Lee recommends following cyber security best practices. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use strong and different passwords to log into different systems<\/li>\n<li>Implement multi-step authentication<\/li>\n<li>Install antivirus software and keep it updated<\/li>\n<li>Remain current with software security updates<\/li>\n<li>Back up your data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>3. Learn about common threats and the precautions to take<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbc.com\/cyber-security\/how-to-protect-your-business\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-ext\" rel=\"noopener\">Protecting your business against cyber risks<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>requires you to know about common threats and the precautions to take.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<table class=\"table b-tundra table-sm\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Threat<\/th>\n<th>Entry point<\/th>\n<th>Root cause<\/th>\n<th>A way to avoid it<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Unauthorized access to a system<\/td>\n<td>Compromised login<\/td>\n<td>Same password used for email, social media, banking<\/td>\n<td>Use a different strong password for each purpose<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ransomware<\/td>\n<td>Email<\/td>\n<td>User-opened attachment<\/td>\n<td>Strengthen awareness of suspect messages \u2013 when in doubt, delete<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks<\/td>\n<td>Network<\/td>\n<td>Massive amounts of traffic sent by hackers<\/td>\n<td>Limit what traffic reaches your systems with a firewall<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Spear phishing<\/td>\n<td>Email<\/td>\n<td>Fake messages targeted at business leaders<\/td>\n<td>Educate users on social engineering techniques<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Smishing<\/td>\n<td>SMS text message<\/td>\n<td>User tricked into providing sensitive information<\/td>\n<td>Teach users not to click on suspicious links in text messages<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5>4. Think safety first<\/h5>\n<p>Teaching employees to \u201cthink before they click\u201d is crucial to avoid social engineering attacks embedded in suspect emails, texts or social media messages. Even the most well-intentioned employees can expose your business to cyber threats if they aren&#8217;t careful.<\/p>\n<p>Cyber security best practices for small businesses include<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber.gc.ca\/en\/provide-employee-awareness-training\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-ext\" rel=\"noopener\">training employees<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safely browsing the internet<\/li>\n<li>Creating strong passwords<\/li>\n<li>Protecting sensitive data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, educating employees about how to recognize fake emails may help prevent business email compromise, in which cyber criminals dupe companies into sending money to false accounts by appearing to send legitimate emails requesting payments or funds transfers.<\/p>\n<h5>5. Protect log-in credentials<\/h5>\n<p>Theft of login credentials is one of the biggest risks, Lee says. Cyber criminals often steal this information through \u201cphishing\u201d emails that trick recipients into providing sensitive data or getting them to click on a link that infects their computer with a virus.<\/p>\n<p>Criminals could use stolen credentials to access your company&#8217;s bank accounts, customer data or other similarly sensitive information, which is why teaching employees to spot malicious emails is important.<\/p>\n<h5>6. Consider software-as-a-service (SaaS) risks<\/h5>\n<p>Using an external software provider doesn&#8217;t necessarily protect you from cyber attacks. While they may have benefits like storing data and requiring two-step authentication, like an activation code sent to your phone, it doesn&#8217;t mean your information is without risk.<\/p>\n<p>Even with multi-factor authentication, a criminal may be able to steal the activation code sent to your phone and use it to log into your account, Lee says. To help mitigate risk, confirm that your SaaS provider checks where a user logs in from an unauthorized location can&#8217;t log into your account.<\/p>\n<h5>7. Put a plan in place<\/h5>\n<p>Document your plans to protect your business, ensuring steps are customized based on your business operations. You&#8217;ll also want to document your expected response if you are attacked. For example, if your business uses mobile devices, you should consider implementing protections for accessing your company data remotely.<\/p>\n<p>As threats evolve, ensure you&#8217;re updating the plan. If you read of a major incident like the recent<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"\/insights\/how-to-protect-your-business-from-ransomware-attacks\" class=\"link-ext\">ransomware attack<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>that shut down gasoline distribution in the southeast United States, consider how you would respond if a cyber criminal seized control of your systems and demanded payment to restore access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to be able to separate out moments of panic versus, \u2018I understand what&#8217;s happening,\u2019\u201d says Lee. You must also be ready to assess whether a threat would be an issue for your business, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always have to think about, \u2018What&#8217;s my role, what&#8217;s my content, and am I outsourcing it to a software-as-a-service provider or am I running it all\u2019,\u201d Lee says.<\/p>\n<p>Developing\u2014and maintaining\u2014 cyber readiness may be a continuous process but it&#8217;s worth the effort to protect against ongoing risks. Lee likens maintaining cyber readiness to walking across a street.
