Trump is only the second person in American history elected\n      to two non-consecutive presidential terms, the other being Democratic\n      President Grover Cleveland in the late 19th century.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      The fact that there was a clear winner just hours after West Coast polls\n      closed was a relief to equity market participants.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      While vote counting is ongoing in some House of Representatives races as\n      of this writing, it\u2019s looking to us like Republicans will retain control\n      of the lower chamber of Congress by a slim margin, which would usher in a\n      Republican sweep. It rose 16.3% when Democrats controlled the presidency and\n          Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress.\n        <\/p>\n        <p class=\"disclaimer\">\n          Source &#8211; RBC Wealth Management, Bloomberg; data through 12\/31\/23; data\n          based on price returns (does not include dividends)\n        <\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <!-- SECTION -->\n    <h2>The market\u2019s focus on the pro-growth agenda<\/h2>\n    <p>\n      From our vantage point, market participants seem optimistic about three\n      important factors:\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >Tax rates on individuals have the potential to stay low and some\n        provisions could be lowered further.<\/strong\n      >\n      If Republicans win control of the House, we think Congress would pass and\n      Trump would sign a new tax package to extend much or all of the low-tax\n      provisions which became law during his first term. This would impact\n      individual income tax rates, and taxes on estates, gifts, capital gains,\n      and dividend income, among other provisions. Trump\u2019s additional campaign\n      proposals for \u201cno tax on tips\u201d and to eliminate taxes on Social Security\n      retirement benefits could be added to any new tax legislation that would\n      extend the existing low-rate provisions. (For more about Trump\u2019s tax\n      proposals and the tax legislation process, see and pages 2\u20135 of\n      <a\n        href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/documents\/insights\/global-insight-monthly-september-edition.pdf\"\n        title=\"Harris and Trump on the issues\"\n        target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n        this report&nbsp;<rbc-icon icon=\"file-pdf\" label=\"$text.get('icon-open-pdf')\"><\/rbc-icon><\/a\n      >.)\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >Tax rates on corporations will likely remain at the low 21 percent\n        rate, at most, and some domestic manufacturers could see their tax rates\n        cut to 15 percent. <\/strong\n      >Also, other business-friendly tax incentives could be written into the\n      tax code if the Republican sweep plays out.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >Trump\u2019s goal of aggressive deregulation is being embraced \u2013 for\n        now.<\/strong\n      >\n      On this score, we think the market\u2019s enthusiasm may be getting ahead of\n      itself. As they say in the great state of Missouri, \u201cshow me.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Trump aimed to deregulate during his first term and achieved this in\n      certain areas, particularly the energy sector. Also, the number of new\n      regulations during Trump\u2019s presidency was initially lower than the first\n      three years of the Biden, Obama, and Clinton administrations, and was even\n      slightly below the George W. Bush administration. But in the fourth year\n      of Trump\u2019s term, the number of regulations surged, perhaps partly due to\n      the pandemic. In total, his administration ended up implementing more\n      economically significant new regulations than Obama did in his first term\n      (see chart on page 9 of\n      <a\n        href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/documents\/insights\/global-insight-monthly-september-edition.pdf\"\n        title=\"Harris and Trump on the issues\"\n        target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this report&nbsp;<rbc-icon icon=\"file-pdf\" label=\"$text.get('icon-open-pdf')\"><\/rbc-icon><\/a\n      >).\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >While Trump genuinely seeks to cut red tape and drastically reduce\n        regulations in his second term \u2013 as do his key advisors and many\n        Republicans in the House and Senate \u2013 we think there will be\n        obstacles:<\/strong\n      >\n    <\/p>\n    <ul class=\"list-spaced\">\n      <li>\n        Federal agency rulemaking can be labourious and tedious, and\n        \u201cderegulation\u201d often requires new regulations;\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        Career federal agency employees, who have historically been more aligned\n        with the Democratic Party, could slow the process or put a spoke in the\n        wheel;\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        Lawsuits will likely challenge certain deregulation provisions and could\n        come from various and well-funded interest groups, including those tied\n        to the Democratic Party and progressive organisations;\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        Federal court rulings could stall or halt specific deregulatory efforts;\n        and\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        We think the Supreme Court\u2019s so-called Chevron ruling tilts authority\n        back to the judicial branch, specifically regarding the interpretation\n        of ambiguous legislation.\n      <\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n    <!-- SECTION -->\n    <h2>Tariff worries are lurking<\/h2>\n    <p>\n      So far, the U.S. equity market seems to be looking past the economic\n      <a\n        href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-eu\/insights\/economic-impacts-of-non-economic-policies\"\n        title=\"Economic impacts of non-economic policies\"\n        >risks<\/a\n      >\n      associated with Trump\u2019s tariff proposals.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Perhaps market participants are waiting to gauge whether the actual\n      implementation of tariffs could be as aggressive as his original campaign\n      proposals for 10 percent across-the-board tariffs on all goods imports,\n      including from allied countries, and 60 percent tariffs on Chinese\n      imports.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >We tend to view tariffs and other trade barriers as mostly lose-lose\n        propositions.<\/strong\n      >\n      RBC Global Asset Management Inc.\u2019s Chief Economist Eric Lascelles has\n      pointed out that while tariffs undeniably hurt the country that has\n      tariffs levied against it, they usually also hurt the country levying\n      them.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >Even so, Lascelles forecasts that the drag on economic growth and the\n        impact on inflation could be manageable for the U.S. economy in both the\n        \u201coriginal tariffs\u201d and \u201cpartial tariffs\u201d scenarios.<\/strong\n      >\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      In the original tariffs scenario (10 percent on all goods and 60 percent\n      on Chinese goods), he estimates that after two years of implementation,\n      U.S. GDP would be 1.5 percent smaller than it otherwise would have been,\n      and inflation would be 0.8 percent higher than it otherwise would have\n      been.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      In the partial tariffs scenario, he estimates U.S. GDP would be 0.2\n      percent smaller, and inflation would be 0.2 percent higher after two years\n      of implementation.\n    <\/p>\n    <!-- EX 2 -->\n    <h3>Economic implications of Chief Economist Eric Lascelles;\n      data as of 8\/5\/24\n    <\/p>\n\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >In this\n        <a\n          href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcgam.com\/en\/ca\/article\/us-election-highlights\/detail\"\n          title=\"2024 U.S. Election Highlights\"\n          style=\"font-weight: bold\"\n          target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video&nbsp;<rbc-icon icon=\"external-link\" label=\"$text.get('icon-external-link')\"><\/rbc-icon><\/a\n        >, Lascelles further discusses why he doesn\u2019t think the worst-case\n        tariff scenarios will play out and how the other pro-growth measures\n        that Trump is proposing could offset the GDP headwinds from tariffs. <\/strong\n      >However, tariffs could impact Fed policy due to their inflationary\n      impulses, which Lascelles also addresses in the video.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      At a minimum, we think tariff policy has the potential to generate\n      volatility for the U.S. and other equity markets in the months ahead.\n    <\/p>\n    <!-- SECTION -->\n    <h2>How to factor industry beneficiaries into portfolio allocations<\/h2>\n    <p>\n      On the first day after the election, four S&amp;P 500 sectors\n      outperformed \u2013 Financials, Industrials, Consumer Discretionary, and Energy.\n      Small-capitalisation stocks also rallied strongly. We think this has\n      become the consensus \u201cTrump presidency\/Republican sweep trade\u201d for the\n      time being.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >For long-term investors, is it worth making big adjustments in\n        portfolios to tilt more toward these areas of the market?<\/strong\n      >\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      While these areas may have further near-term outperformance, we think it\u2019s\n      important to keep in mind that over the course of a full four-year\n      presidential term, things don\u2019t always pan out according to the\n      president\u2019s policy preferences.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >Just because a president tends to favour (or disfavour) certain\n        industries doesn\u2019t mean market performance will follow suit. <\/strong\n      >One example: The Energy sector performed well soon after Trump was\n      elected in 2016 and had other spurts of outperformance during his\n      presidency. But in the latter part of 2018 the sector began to struggle,\n      and during his full four-year term it badly underperformed the S&amp;P 500\n      for a variety of reasons. There are other examples associated with the\n      Biden administration.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Regarding Industrials, RBC Capital Markets LLC\u2019s Head of U.S. Equity\n      Strategy Lori Calvasina points out that she currently views this sector as\n      being expensive from a valuation standpoint and it underperformed when\n      Trump imposed tariffs on China in 2018.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Regarding small-cap stocks, Calvasina thinks they look \u201ca bit stretched\u201d\n      at this stage, and notes that moves associated with the last two elections\n      were short-lived. We think the direction of interest rates, inflation, and\n      Fed policy will be much greater determinants of small-cap performance in\n      the coming months and years.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      <strong\n        >The bottom line is that other factors tend to dictate stock performance\n        more<\/strong\n      >\n      than who sits in the Oval Office and which political party controls\n      Congress. Industry and sector tilts in portfolios should be evaluated\n      according to a range of factors, not solely political ones.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Furthermore, well-balanced equity portfolios should already have exposure\n      to these areas of the market.\n    <\/p>\n    <!-- SECTION -->\n    <h2>\n      Elections come and go: Don\u2019t deviate from long-term investment plans\n    <\/h2>\n    <p>\n      There is little doubt in our minds that market participants will pay more\n      attention to Washington than they have under Biden, as we expect Trump\u2019s\n      policies to be accompanied by dramatic rhetoric and his actions to be\n      bolder. This could generate some equity market volatility at times.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      For long-term investors, we think the most prudent strategy vis-\u00e0-vis\n      elections is to:\n    <\/p>\n    <ul class=\"list-spaced\">\n      <li>\n        Give deference to the long-term investment strategy that you already\n        have in place; and\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        Avoid the temptation of making drastic asset class or sector changes\n        based on the election outcome.\n      <\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n    <p>\n      If you\u2019re enthusiastic about Trump retaking the White House, don\u2019t get out\n      over your skis.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      If you\u2019re concerned about another Trump presidency, don\u2019t let emotions get\n      in the way of sound investment decisions. Markets have risen under both\n      Republican and Democratic presidents.\n    <\/p>\n    <p>\n      Ultimately, over the course of the next four years, we think the U.S.\n      equity market will be impacted more by the natural ebb and flow of the\n      business cycle, Fed policy, and innovation.
