The holidays are a wonderful time to relax, slow down and spend time with friends and loved ones. They also offer families a valuable opportunity to do something most people would rather avoid: talk about their shared financial interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angie O\u2019Leary, head of Wealth Planning at RBC Wealth Management\u2013U.S., says it\u2019s important for families to have open and frank conversations about their shared assets and finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile these can be delicate discussion topics at times, certainly, the outcomes are generally positive,\u201d O\u2019Leary says. \u201cThe process can help family members deal with issues that are bound to come up sooner or later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many families with members living across the country or globe, the holidays provide a great opportunity to talk about things that will directly impact each family member\u2019s financial future while everyone is together for a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studies show that families often avoid having discussions about their financial interests. But avoidance can lead to confusion down the road, when adult children must begin making financial decisions or take over managing their parents\u2019 finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt used to be considered taboo to discuss finances,\u201d O’Leary says. \u201cI think it\u2019s a stigma that\u2019s slow to change over the generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family meetings give everyone a chance to get up to speed on financial topics. Having an open and regular conversation can also reduce uncertainty and resentment<\/a> on critical family issues, like inheritance planning or handing over the reins of a family business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holding a productive family meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While some people may put family meetings in the same category as a root canal, they are often surprised at how much good can come from the get-togethers, says Cyndy Ranzau, a wealth strategist with RBC Wealth Management\u2013U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe more knowledge that each person has, the better\u2014and I think that\u2019s particularly true when you\u2019re talking about family finances,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in order for the meeting to be worthwhile, family members must be willing to tackle difficult topics. Ranzau recommends preparing an agenda to handle complex issues more efficiently. Key topics can cover a broad range from general financial well-being, to wills and trusts, to the condition of the family home. When there\u2019s a younger generation involved, funding education<\/a> is typically added to the agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Know where you and your family are headed<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll help you balance today\u2019s needs with tomorrow\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nFind a financial advisor<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n

Start the discussion by prioritizing what you\u2019d like to cover, and set a reasonable goal for the topics that can be addressed within the timeframe you have allotted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt may be a case where we need to talk about estate planning and help give parameters about why a trust may be beneficial,\u201d Ranzau says. \u201cOr it may be, \u2018By the way, Mom and Dad have quite a bit of money\u2014a lot more than you thought\u2014and they want to help you prepare for the responsibility of that money when they pass.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem with procrastinating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most important topics for discussion at a family meeting involve life insurance<\/a>, planning for incapacity and retirement planning\u2014topics that family members may be prone to put off. \u201cFinances are easy to push to the backburner because of the immediate needs that come up,\u201d O\u2019Leary says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Procrastinating on a difficult discussion can be a natural reflex, but it can leave you and your family in a vulnerable position. Take, for example, an unexpected family death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat if you don\u2019t have a will or a trust and there is no insurance policy?\u201d O\u2019Leary says. \u201cThen it\u2019s too late, so it\u2019s always better to get ahead of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a traditional one-on-one meeting with an advisor can accomplish a lot, it\u2019s often the case that families tend to let one member handle financial decisions, which can lead to big problems if the individual with the purse strings unexpectedly becomes incapacitated, even for a short time. It\u2019s important to have a plan to transfer capacity if needed using a power of attorney<\/a>, and to ensure your assets are properly titled with current beneficiary designations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informing the next generation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With children and grandchildren in the picture, a regular meeting can also act as a sort of Finance 101, and a chance to break down complex financial topics<\/a> into plain language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, they may know how to use a debit and credit card, but they may be a bit shaky on fundamentals like the importance of paying bills on time, what a credit score is, and how a 401(k) works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While scheduled meetings are helpful in this respect, keeping the conversations going is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t know what they don\u2019t know,\u201d says Ranzau. \u201cThey do their own thing, they\u2019re busy with life, they\u2019ve got their own job or families or their own ambitions. This is just so far down on the list that for a lot of people it\u2019s an afterthought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scheduling meetings can be a hassle. But with the family already together over the holidays, discussing the financial situation can help avoid future tensions. And lunch meetings are a great way to get rid of leftover turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
