At public schools across the country, teachers are being asked to do more with less. Deep budget deficits have led to cuts in funding and programs as schools try to figure out how to get by. But at Anwatin Middle School in Minneapolis, teachers still enjoy the opportunity to be creative and innovative in and out of the classroom, which benefits them as much as it benefits their students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s due in part to the support of RBC Wealth Management\u2013U.S., which helps the school fund programs that might not otherwise be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRBC provides the resources that allow us to give a voice to our students,\u201d says Sarah Wernimont, a Language and Literature teacher and International Baccalaureate coordinator at Anwatin. \u201cThis allows them to participate in the classrooms in a more meaningful way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For nearly 30 years, RBC Wealth Management has supported Anwatin in a variety of ways. And at a time when the need is greater than ever, the firm has found more ways to help out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helping students be the best they can be<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The partnership between Anwatin and RBC Wealth Management started in 1993, when the firm was known as Dain Bosworth. Dick McFarland, the firm\u2019s CEO at the time, worked with the superintendent of Minneapolis schools to \u201cadopt\u201d Anwatin. Dain Bosworth\u2019s employees initially served as mentors and coaches, helping students with homework or chaperoning school events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, a lot has changed, both for the school and for its partnership with RBC Wealth Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010, Anwatin became an International Baccalaureate World School, giving the school\u2019s curriculum a more international focus. (Today, Anwatin is one of only 21 International Baccalaureate middle schools in Minnesota.) Also in 2010, Anwatin added Spanish dual immersion, making it the only kindergarten through eighth grade Spanish immersion program in all of Minneapolis Public Schools, and the first middle school in Minnesota to have both dual immersion and the International Baccalaureate curriculum. One third of all students at Anwatin now take three classes in Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During that time, as the school has grown and evolved, the support that RBC Wealth Management provides Anwatin hasn\u2019t wavered. Today, the firm provides funding for many Anwatin programs, including Taste of Anwatin, an annual event that raises awareness of local hunger issues and money for a local food shelf (RBC also matches the funds raised at the event for the food shelf). RBC provides $10,000 in \u201ctargeted contributions\u201d each year, which fund innovative teaching ideas that couldn\u2019t otherwise be funded through the school. Some past examples include classroom chinchillas, ball stability chairs, and pig hearts for dissection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RBC Wealth Management provides financial support for the annual Taste of Anwatin event, which raises money for a local food shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe support RBC provides through the targeted contributions allows teachers to be creative, which allows students to be creative too,\u201d Wernimont says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, RBC Wealth Management has also sponsored an annual retreat for seventh grade students, a roller-skating trip for students who make the honor roll, a catered breakfast for Anwatin staff before the school\u2019s winter break, a Career Day at the firm\u2019s downtown Minneapolis offices for eighth grade students, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the students at Anwatin come from economically-challenged neighborhoods and households in Minneapolis, Wernimont says, which makes RBC Wealth Management\u2019s support all the more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYouth education is a key focus for us,\u201d says Shana Deuel, a sponsorship marketing manager at the firm who has worked with the Anwatin partnership for many years. \u201cWe\u2019re proud to partner with Anwatin to help those students be the best they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For McFarland, who got the partnership started so many years ago, it\u2019s been especially gratifying to see that the support from RBC Wealth Management hasn\u2019t wavered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am so proud of RBC for maintaining that involvement,\u201d says McFarland, who retired in 2000. \u201cI am absolutely convinced that we\u2019ve made a difference in the lives of a lot of kids over the past many years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about, Wernimont says\u2014ensuring that the students at Anwatin are equipped to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRBC\u2019s support means they believe in our kids, and that they\u2019re willing to help these kids,\u201d she says. \u201cThat support means more than just the money. It means we can really help these kids be who they want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
