Based in Jersey, Alan Binnington specialises in establishing and managing offshore structures for high-net-worth individuals and their families, and has experience in servicing the wealth management and estate planning needs of clients from the UK, Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Binnington is responsible for the operation and supervision of a client relationship team and managing the financial and estate planning interests of a portfolio of private clients. This includes the administration of such assets as cash and marketable securities, real estate and family businesses through a broad range of trusts, companies and other fiduciary structures. In addition to his client handling and business development responsibilities, a key part of Binnington's role involves working with RBC’s fiduciary professionals and families' legal advisors on the resolution of contentious matters and challenges to trust structures, given his background as a trust lawyer.

Born in Jersey, Binnington studied law at St. Catharine’s College Cambridge, following which he qualified as a barrister. On his return to Jersey, he qualified as a Jersey advocate in 1984 and was subsequently appointed a crown advocate. Binnington was a partner in the Jersey law firm Mourant du Feu & Jeune from 1985 to 2009, specialising for many years in commercial litigation and the formation and administration of structures for high-net-worth families. Binnington joined RBC in 2009, following the company’s acquisition of Mourant Private Wealth.

Binnington is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the Association of Contentious Trust & Probate Specialists and an Academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He is also one of Jersey’s law commissioners.

Binnington is a regular speaker and writer on technical fiduciary subjects, including international trust law, philanthropy, foundations and Sharia trusts. In recent years, he has spoken at a range of conferences including those held by Jersey Finance, Legal Week and the International Bar Association and has had articles published in a range of leading trust publications, including Private Client Practitioner, Trusts and Trustees and the STEP Journal.
