Our history – from 1901 to today

A bond-focused start
In 1901, Dominion Securities Corporation Limited was established in Toronto. Early business focused on underwriting and distributing government and municipal bonds—and began to expand leading up to the First World War.

1929 to 1937

1929 – forming the RBC Art Collection
Today, parts of the collection are housed in RBC Wealth Management offices in Canada, the U.S. and the British Isles.

1937 – a new department
A new stock trading department completed Dominion Securities’ investment capabilities.

1947 – an important sponsorship

Royal Bank first sponsored the Canadian Olympic Association. This would become the longest Olympic sponsorship in Canadian history.

1950 – national presence

By the 1950s, Dominion Securities branches were operating in all the principal Canadian cities.

1961 – an innovative first

Royal Bank was the first Canadian bank to install a computer, an IBM 1401. Used for accounting, it occupied an entire room.

At RBC Wealth Management, we continue to innovate and develop digital tools to help our clients and advisors.

1964 to 1967

1964 – we’ll be together later
Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management Ltd. incorporated.

1967 – another banking first
Royal Bank made the first Canadian banking transaction by computer: a deposit.

1979 – yet another first

Royal Bank established an Equal Employment Opportunity program, the first of its kind for a Canadian bank.

1984 ­– growth

Dominion Securities grew through strategic acquisitions, including merging with Pitfield, Mackay, Ross Limited to create Dominion Securities Pitfield.

1989 – further growth

Dominion Securities continued to grow through strategic acquisitions, including Pemberton Houston Willoughby Investment Corporation.

Royal Trustco Investment Counsel Inc. incorporated.

1990 to 1991

1990 – we’ll be together later
Royal Trust Corporation of Canada incorporated.

1991 – a securities first
Royal Bank becomes the first Canadian bank to receive regulatory approval to underwrite corporate securities in the U.S. through its subsidiary, Dominion Securities.

1993 to 1995

1993 – growth
RBC acquired Royal Trust.

1995 – a new name
Royal Trustco Investment Counsel Inc. changed its name to RT Investment Counsel Inc.

1996 to 1999

1996 – part of RBC
Dominion Securities acquired Richardson Greenshields of Canada Ltd. RBC Royal Bank obtained 100% ownership of RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

1999 – RBC Private Counsel forms
Connor Clark, Global Private Banking Canada and RT Investment Counsel Inc. formed RBC Private Counsel Inc.

2007 – RBC Wealth Management Services established

Formation of Wealth Management Services, a team of leading professionals, including accountants and lawyers, dedicated to serving the wealth management needs of clients.

2008 – a successful combination

Phillips, Hager & North’s Discretionary Private Client business and RBC Private Counsel Inc. combined to form RBC Phillips, Hager & North Investment Counsel, one of Canada’s largest private client investment counselling businesses.

2015 – expansion to the U.S.

RBC expanded its footprint in private and commercial banking and wealth management in the U.S., with its $5 billion acquisition of L.A.-based City National Bank.
