A caregiver’s guide to plan and care with confidence

Eldercare

A panel of specialists share what families and caregivers need to know about the caregiving journey.

Caregiving can be one of the most meaningful and demanding jobs an individual will ever have. One quarter of the Canadian population over the age of 15 identify as caregivers. And as life expectancy numbers in Canada start to trend higher again, planning for health and wealth has never been more important.

In a recent panel discussion, specialists from Elder Caring Inc., CanAge, and Baycrest’s Koschitzky Centre for Innovations in Caregiving joined RBC Wealth Management to share what you can do to help prepare yourself and your family for the caregiving journey. Here are five key takeaways:

  1. Start planning early and have conversations in a period of calm to help prevent additional stress later
  2. Identify yourself as a caregiver, which can help open doors to more resources sooner
  3. Review the financial impact and available support
  4. Embrace digital tools and home technologies to help lighten the load
  5. Divide responsibilities among family members and work as a team to help prevent caregiving burnout

Your next steps

Talk with your family during calm moments to plan ahead, and meet with your advisor to explore different care scenarios and understand how this may impact your wealth plan.
